The Humphrey Hughes House, at the beach in Cape May, NJ

Introduction:

The Humphrey Hughes House, nestled in the heart of Cape May's primary historic district, is one of the city’s most authentically restored Inns. Perhaps the most spacious and gracious of them all, The Humphrey Hughes House was built to be a luxurious summer house in 1903. Until 1980, it was a private home and while today the house is filled with magnificent antiques, it still feels more like a home than a museum. The hallmarks of The Humphrey Hughes House hospitality are warmth coupled with Victorian charm and liberally seasoned with casual, yet elegant creature comforts.

Enjoy the endless sea breezes that whisper through the expansive rooms. Lounge in inviting porch rockers on the large wraparound veranda or in the glistening glass enclosed sun porch. In addition to the expected pleasures of sand and surf, enjoy historic house and museum tours, gardens, Cape May Point State Park, bird watching, bicycling, horseback riding, antiquing, fishing, shopping, tennis and nearby golf.

Lorraine and Terry Schmidt have owned and operated The Humphrey Hughes House since 1987. They, along with their experienced and courteous staff, look forward to welcoming you to Cape May.

Humphrey Hughes House History
Humphrey Hughs House, Cape May, NJ

Captain Humphrey Hughes arrived in Cape May in 1692 and soon became one of the area's original landowners. A few decades later, his son, Humphrey Hughes II, added to the family holdings and purchased the ground on which the Humphrey Hughes House now stands. The first structure built on the property was moved to another location, and the current one was erected in 1903. The home remained in the Hughes family hands until Dr. Harold Hughes' death in 1980.

Even today, the building is alternately referred to by Cape May residents as either "The Hughes House" or "the doctor's office." Tastefully restored to its original late Victorian ambiance, the inn provides the perfect setting for a carefree seaside holiday and welcomes overnight guests. Enjoy  this Cape May Bed and Breakfast Inn.
